Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A HYBRID PUBLISHER?
As defined by the Independent Book Publisher's Association: Hybrid publishing companies behave just like traditional publishing companies in all respects, except that they publish books using an author-subsidized business model, as opposed to financing all costs themselves and, in exchange, return a higher-than-industry-standard share of sales proceeds to the author.
  • A hybrid publisher has a publishing mission and a vision.
  • A hybrid publisher vets submissions, publishing only those titles that meet the mission and vision of the company.
  • A hybrid publisher must commit to transparency in its business practices. This includes being clear about the cost of services and providing an honest estimation of each book’s potential for success.
  • Provide a clear contract for each book published.
  • A hybrid publisher is a true publishing house, with either a publisher or a publishing team developing and distributing books using the hybrid publisher’s own imprint(s) and ISBNs.
  • A hybrid publisher accepts full responsibility for the quality of the titles it publishes. Books released by a hybrid publisher should be on par with traditionally published books in terms of adherence to industry standards.
  • A hybrid publisher is responsible for producing books edited, designed, and produced to a professional degree. This includes assigning editors for developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading, as needed, together with following traditional standards for a professionally designed book. All editors and designers must be publisher approved; they can be part of the publisher’s internal staff or outsourced.
  • A hybrid publisher pursues and manages a range of publishing rights, normally publishes in both print and digital formats, as appropriate, and perhaps pursues other rights, in order to reach the widest possible readership.
  • A hybrid publisher provides distribution services and has a strategic approach to making books available to consumers.
  • A hybrid publisher pays authors a higher-than-standard royalty. The author’s share must be laid out transparently and must be commensurate with the author’s investment. In most cases, the author’s royalty should be greater than 50% of net on both print and digital books.
DO YOU ACCEPT ALL SUBMISSIONS FOR PUBLICATION?
No. We carefully vet all submissions, publishing only those titles that align with our broader goals and mission. Our current manuscript acceptance rate stands around 14%.
what kinds of book submissions are you currently accepting?
The short answer...
We are particularly enthusiastic about non-fiction titles that delve into social causes, trauma survival, and other groundbreaking concepts that challenge the status quo.

---

We predominantly focus on non-fiction works, but we don't discourage fiction submissions. We believe in the profound influence of real-life stories, research-driven narratives, and thought-provoking analyses that shed light on significant issues facing individuals and communities today.

We actively seek manuscripts that address pressing social causes and advocate for positive change. Whether it's an exploration of environmental sustainability, human rights, education reform, or any other crucial societal issue, we are eager to amplify authors' voices and contribute to meaningful conversations that can shape a better world.

We are passionate about sharing stories of resilience and triumph over adversity. We welcome compelling accounts of trauma survival, personal growth, and narratives that empower readers to find hope and healing in the face of life's challenges.

If your manuscript holds revolutionary ideas, innovative solutions, or groundbreaking concepts with the potential to disrupt established norms, we want to hear from you. We are excited to explore manuscripts that challenge conventional thinking and envision a brighter, more equitable future for all.

We actively encourage submissions from authors of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. We are committed to fostering inclusivity and amplifying voices that have been historically underrepresented in publishing.
Where are your books sold, and who is your sales force?
Our titles are sold and distributed by Los Angeles-based SCB Distributors.

SCB works with top commission sales groups with experienced book reps presenting titles to:
  • major and regional bookstore chains: Barnes and Noble, Books-a-Million, Indigo, Chapters and Hastings
  • retail wholesalers: Ingram, Baker and Taylor, New Leaf, Partners, Bookazine, Brodart, Follett, Hudson News, Nutribooks and many others
  • public libraries and school libraries
  • independent, college bookstores and museum stores
  • the major online retailers, including Amazon, bn.com and Powells.com

For select titles, SCB works with several overseas distributors including:
  • Turnaround Publisher Services, for UK & Europe/General titles
  • Deep Books, for UK & Europe/Body, Mind & Spirit titles
  • Brumby Books, for Australia/Body, Mind & Spirit and Gift titles

SCB commands booths and SCB principals attend the world's major book sales shows and rights markets, including:
  • Frankfurt Book Fair
  • London Book Fair
  • Book Expo America
  • the biannual library show, the ALA

SCB also takes booths at shows and conventions related to our special interest catalogs:
  • The New York Art Book Fair
  • INATS, the International New Age Trade show
  • the biannual ILS in Las Vegas
  • the Los Angeles and NYC Gift Shows
  • and more
My manuscript is already written and edited. Can I just publish it with you?
Our preference is to engage with authors from the initial stages, jointly shaping the book concept and manuscript. Nevertheless, in the case of a project that aligns with both our quality standards and publishing criteria, we are open to starting collaboration at the manuscript draft phase.
Do you handle foreign rights and subsidiary sales?
Yes, we represent our authors for the sale of their foreign translation rights. Our authors have the option to place their books on our international rights portal account to make their book available to international buyers and reps. Our team and/or representatives attend the Frankfurt Book Fair, where we continue to build on our relationships with publishers and subagents abroad.
How much does it cost to have MANGO MOON MEDIA publish my book?
Due to the many variables of a book project, we custom quote on every project based on its scope, development status, and the author’s time frame for writing and need for editorial support. Our most basic packages start at $8,000 and go upwards of $20,000, plus the cost of printing and third-party marketing and publicity services.

Do you offer advances? And what is your royalty rate?
We don’t offer advances. As the financial backer of your own work, you never relinquish ownership of it, so instead of paying you a small royalty and keeping the rest of the profits as a traditional publisher would, we take a commission (50 percent of net receipts) to cover the costs associated with distributing it, and you keep the rest.

Under special circumstances we offer select authors a partnership level agreement where you keep all the net profits of your sales until you recoup your full initial investment.

Can I sell my book directly to readers through my business or OTHER EVENTS?
Yes! This is where the beauty of our model really pays off for authors. The trade market has low profit margins across the board, but by eliminating retailer discounts and distributors’ fees, direct sales can be incredibly lucrative, netting you 100 percent of your investment. We just ask that your submit a minimum book order of 40 books for this discount.

HOW DO I KNOW IF HYBRID PUBLISHING THE RIGHT PUBLISHING PATH FOR ME?
Hybrid publishing isn’t right for everyone. But it can be a great option for you if at least a few of these apply to you:
  • You’re in a position to financially support the development of your book
  • You have a truly great nonfiction book or idea with serious market potential
  • You have a solid online platform or influential real-life network
  • You expect to sell a lot of books direct to your audience, either online or at live events
  • Your sales will be largely generated by your name or your own marketing activities, and you want to keep more of the profits from those sales
  • You'd like focus on writing more than spending time full production of your book. Self-publishing is a major entrepreneurial undertaking in which you must do all the hiring and other administrative legwork.
  • You don't want to make all the creative decisions yourself, even in areas in which you may not have any expertise.
  • You’ve been traditionally published or have self-published in the past and found the results disappointing
