Social Change Production: V-Day

In 2010 Mari Angulo, Mango Moon Co-Founder, was the license holder of the first V-Day "Vagina Monologues" fundraising event to take place in northern Mexico. The performance was shown to over 700 attendees and was widely promoted on television, radio, online and in print publications, garnering both corporate and government support.

The funds raised were primarily donated to a local battered women's shelter. Ten percent of the funds supported Vday's annual campaign, which in 2010 supported women survivors of violence, located in Bukavu, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

With the support of marketing colleagues, Sociedad Activa, and Universidad del Valle de Mexico, Mari was able to lead a complex team of people to cast amateur actresses, plan, promote, and execute a successful performance with over 700 attendees. The event, which took place inside the civic auditorium of Sonora, was widely promoted on television, radio, online and publications, garnering corporate as well as government support.

V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls... a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations.  Each year, thousands of V-Day benefit events take place produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls.

V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sex slavery. Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues {and other theatrical works], Spotlight Teach-Ins and workshops, to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities. The Performance
The "Vagina Monologues" performance featured thirteen volunteer, amateur actresses from all walks of life: house wives, students, artists, and professors of all ages.  The team was lead and directed by Veronica Vazquez Heiras, trained professional actress, singer, and performer.  Inspired by the event, Veronica went on to open her own cabaret theater (Voces Bar) that now showcases acting performances seasonally.

Many members of the group have gone on to spearhead and support a growing community of theater and arts in Hermosillo, Sonora. In some cases attaining notoriety at a national level.
